Ethiopia has no IBAN

Ethiopian banks do not issue IBANs, and there is no Ethiopian IBAN format waiting to be found. A transfer into Ethiopia needs three things: the bank’s SWIFT code from the table above, the full account number, and the account holder’s name spelled the way the bank holds it. If a transfer form will not proceed without an IBAN, that form was built for somewhere else, and the answer is to send by SWIFT instead.

telebirr and M-PESA have no SWIFT code

They are wallets, not banks. A wallet holds no SWIFT/BIC code and cannot receive an international wire. Directories that publish a “telebirr SWIFT code” page are sending people to look for something that does not exist.

To get money from abroad to somebody who uses a wallet, send it to their bank account on that bank’s SWIFT code, or use a remittance service that pays out to wallets directly. CBE Birr and COOPay sit alongside accounts at CBE and Cooperative Bank of Oromia, so those banks’ codes are the route in.

When the code does not match the bank’s name

A SWIFT code is issued once and does not change when a bank rebrands, so several Ethiopian codes carry names the banks no longer use. Hibret Bank is UNTDETAA, from United Bank. Global Bank Ethiopia is DEGAETAA, from Debub Global. Awash Bank and Oromia Bank are AWINETAA and ORIRETAA, both from when they were called International. In every one of those cases the mismatched code is the right one.

Where these came from

Each code was checked against more than one published SWIFT directory before it went in the table, and a code that could not be corroborated was left out rather than guessed at. That means this list may be missing a bank; it should not mean it is wrong about one. If you find a code here that your bank disagrees with, your bank is right, and we would like to know.
